News
for the Week of May 6, 2009
Rick’s Writin’s
I want to start this week by saying a big "THANK YOU!!!!" to
all of you that came out yesterday for a very excellent Free Comic Book
Day. I hope enjoy all the goodies and great reading you picked up, taking
advantage of the store wide sale. I thought the publisher's selections
of FCBD comics this year were some of the best they've offered. And as
far as the sale is concerned, I'm going to keep the dollar books at $.50
cents for the next week, so take advantage of that while you can. A side
effect of the busy day yesterday is that I'm still tired so I'm going
to go right into the comics for this week:
There are some great beginnings in this weeks offerings, starting with
the new League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Volume 3 1910, by Alan Moore,
the writer of Watchmen. His artist is Kevin O'Neill, the same artist as
the three previous volumes of LOEG. This one, published by Top Shelf instead
of DC, takes place twelve years after previous volume, where the League
is confronted by an occult order and are also dealing with a very nasty
serial killer. It's the first of three pieces of this set, with each taking
place in a different distinct era, and though it is a $7.95 cover price,
it’s eighty pages of Alan Moore. Each piece will be a self contained
story too. If you only know the movie, you don't know the League of Extraordinary
Gentlemen. This should be a good one. Next, DC gives Justice Society leader
Power Girl (#1) her own on-going book, where she will start by building
a new identity for herself, and deal with some of her past at the same
time. It's written by Jimmy Palmiotti, with art by Amanda Conner (she
did the Catwoman print I have in the shop, as well as The Pro, JSA Confidential
and much more). There'll be two covers, one by Ms. Conner and the other
by arteest of beautiful women Adam Hughes. Long lost Kurk Busiek's Astro
City makes its comeback with the first issue of Book Three of Astro City
Dark Ages (#1 of 4) mini series. The story starts in a whole new era (the
early 1980's) and is a great jumping on point for new readers. One of
these days I'm going to get to Astro City. I've read a very little bit
when it first came out, and enjoyed it, but I didn't continue. I think
what happened was Mr. Busiek got sick and there was a big gap when the
book wasn't able to be done, and I didn't pick it up when it did start
back up. Marvel, also launches the New Mutants (#1) again, for I think
the fourth time. I'm sure this one will be totally different than the
other three times. Alex Ross is doing one of the three covers offered,
so that's something.
All is not lost in Marvel land though, Spider-Man (Amazing # 593) takes
on the all new Vulture in the second of the three part "24/7"
story, building up to the big story leading up to Amazing Spider-Man #600
coming later this summer, which leads to fall and builds up to winter
and then Christmas!! Yay! Flash fans, are you ready for part two of Flash:
Rebirth? the mini what brings you the newly not dead Barry Allen Flash
(#2 of 5) investigating what happened to a newly dead speedster and what's
going on with the Speed Force. Connection? Yes? No? Maybe so. And who's
this dead speedster? Batman: Battle for the Cowl finally gets to my girl
Cassie Batgirl with Battle for the Cowl: The Network as Cassie Batgirl,
Huntress, Manhunter, Misfit and more try to keep a spiraling out of control
Gotham City in check. We should find out what's next for most of this
group. Perhaps a new title of some sort. I think so, though Manhunter
will start as a co-feature in Detective Comics soon. I think that's it
for now folks. I'm going to watch some baseball and catch up on some of
my reading. I'm way, way, behind and it's about time to work on that stack
of books piling up. Til' next week...
Paula’s Picks
Thanks to everyone that stopped in on Free Comic Book Day! I hope everyone
enjoyed their goodies. I read the Green Lantern FCBD book and I’m
looking forward to the new Blackest Night series.
The writer and artist team of Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Conner are together
again for the new Power Girl series. I’m pretty excited to read
this one. I love Amanda Conner’s art. I got to meet her at Emerald
City ComiCon and she was so nice! Power Girl starts having a secret identity.
It should be interesting. I wonder what she’ll choose to be…a
Business Blowout Booty Shaker?
Superman Escape from Bizarro World comes out in soft cover this week.
This book features art by the great Eric Powell. He does the Goon books
and I think his art style is perfect for Bizarro!
Buffy gets lower car insurance for hitting #25 this week. I’m way
behind on my Buffy, so I think it’s time I catch up.
