News for the Week of February 4, 2009
Rick’s Writin’s
I am ready for some FOOTBALL!!! I guess I've gotta be for the Cardinals
today, though they are our division rivals. The bad taste from Superbowl
XL against the Steelers still lingers, so there's no way I can root for
them. (Sorry, President Obama). All I really want is a good game. I think
that Cards receiver Larry Fitzgerald is pretty damn good, and I root for
Kurt Warner to have a good game. The Steelers defense is tough so it looks
like it could be a good one. It's no fun to get all excited and liquored
up for a game and then have it be a blow out. The sports pundits seem
to think it's going to be a battle of strengths: Cardinal offense vs Steeler
Defense, but I think the key to the game is how well the Cardinal defense
can stop the Steelers offense. If the Cards can stop the Steelers then
I think their offense will score on the Steelers enough to win. Steelers
are favored by 6 1/2 as of last I heard this morning. As an avid TV watcher
I'm also into the commercials. Last year I thought the Pepsi Max commercials
were funny, so I tried it, liked it, and it has since turned into a staple
for me. I always check the next day for reactions and peoples/critics
picks for the best and worst. At $2.3 -$3.0 million a pop for a thirty
second ad (69 total spots generating more than $200 million in ad revenue)
there's a lot at stake for the ad players. This year also, one of my favorite
shows, The Office, has the prime after game spot. It'll be a one hour
episode and though there usually isn't guest stars on the show, somehow
Jack Black, Jessica Alba and Cloris Leachman will appear. Looking forward
to that too.
As I want to get ready for
the game (the above mentioned liquored up. Sorry Ma.) I'm going to keep
this short. Plague Monkey Paula is going to talk about the kajillion first
issues coming this week, but I've got the zero issue duty. DC is re-launching
Adventure Comics (#0) and putting the Legion of Superheroes back in it,
as they were when I was a kid. This zero issue is a reprint from issue
Adventure #247 (April 1958), which featured the Legion's first appearance,
and the classic cover in which Superboy is rejected for Legion membership.
It's a pretty good story, and the issue is only a buck, so I hope you
give it a try. Also, Final Crisis: Legion of Three Worlds (#3 of 5) FINALLY
shows up, the week after the last issue of the main Final Crisis. Maybe
that was the plan, but I doubt it. Anyhow, I've still not read FC Legion,
but by most accounts it's worth the read. As far as lateness goes however,
FC Legion is dwarfed by Marvel's returning Ultimate Wolverine vs Hulk,
of which only two of five issues came out, and then fell of the face of
the earth for nearly three YEARS. Marvel is offering a reprint of issue
number's one and two (#1 shipping this week) just so people that have
lost, thrown out or forgotten where their copies are, can buy new ones.
Luckily, we still have some of the first prints of both, so we'll be mixing
them in with the second prints. Marvel promises they'll finish the story
this time. We'll see. In Marvel's defense, series writer Damon Lindelof
has been busy with his big time TV hit "LOST". We'll it's 12:34pm
(I love 12:34, either am or pm. I don't know why I get so much satisfaction
seeing the clock go 1234) game is at 3:00 or so, so time to walky doggie
and get ready to get ready. Til' next time...
Plague Monkey Paula’s
Picks
Yep. That’s me! This cold has been beating me up for a week and
a half now. It’s got to have a different name than cold. It’s
so much worse than a regular cold but not the flu. I’ll call it
SuperCold. It has affected me everywhere a cold can. Nose, throat, ears
and now eyes. The last time I was this sick was about 7 or 8 years ago
when I lived in Virginia. I think I’m finally recovering though.
*fingers crossed*
Rick was right about the number
1s this week. We’ve got a total of 14 new #1s (not counting Ultimate
Hulk vs Wolverine).
>From Marvel, We’re getting some new number 1s that are also
Dark Reign tie-ins. Black Panther 2 #1 features a new lady Black Panther.
Agents of Atlas #1 features the Agents vs the Dark Avengers. Secret Warriors
#1 is about Nick Fury’s group of heroes that uncover a secret. Astonishing
Tales #1 is a new anthology from Marvel. Wolverine, Punisher and Iron
Man are featured in the first issue. We’re also getting from Marvel
War of Kings Darkhawk #1, X-Men First Class Finals #1, X-Men Lives and
Times of Lucas Bishop #1 and X-Men vs Hulk #1.
Along with all the Marvel
number 1s, we’re getting some interesting indie number 1s as well.
Eureka #1 is based on the Sci-Fi show and features new stories. It’s
written by the creator, Andrew Cosby and Brendan Hay, a writer for the
Daily Show. If you haven’t heard of the show, I recommend you check
it out. It’s about a new sheriff in a town filled with super geniuses.
There’s some crazy cool gadgets and lots of great jokes! Hotwire
#1 is another new one from the publisher Radical (publishers of City of
Dust). In this story, the dead and the living coexist and a Detective
Exorcist is trying to find out why so many of them are turning violent.
This is also the week of the bounty hunters! Bad Dog #1 is about a bounty
hunter werewolf and ex-preacher. Dead Irons #1 is about a family of zombie
bounty hunters.
Not to be left out, DC is
coming out with a new series called Mighty #1. This series takes place
in world where there’s only 1 superhero: Alpha One. A cop and Alpha
One must work together to solve murders.
Wow! What a lot of new series!
I hope you all have some time to check them out and let me know what you
think of them. Enjoy the big game everyone! (apparently Super Bowl Is
copyrighted, so I can’t say it)
