News for the Week of November 26, 2008
Rick’s Writin’s
Since today I'd rather be reading comics that writing about them, I'm
going to make this a short one. First, comics will be on time this week,
so Wednesday (Nov 26th) as usual. The week AFTER the holiday, for whatever
reason, books will be in on Thursday. Second, we'll be trying to punch
up sales for the Holidays, so keep an eye out for some great deals in
the store the next few weeks. I'm not sure what all I'm going to do, but
I think and hope it'll be worth your time to look. Third, this is Previews
and Wizard week, and end of the November ordering period. I need November
orders in by not later than Saturday after Thanksgiving (Turkey, Lobster,
Pizzatater Pie, Pancakes piled up until they reach the sky......OOHHH,
I'm gonna eat and eat and eat and Eat until I die!! Thank You Goofy. I'm
going to my friend Jan's for Thanksgiving dinner. It's going to be...AWESOME,
as usual! I wish you all a great dinner too). Comics for this week are
pretty decent, with quite a few medium level books and a couple nuggets
of gold. Batman takes another step closer to his RIP fate in Batman (#681).
I'm not sure exactly where they're going with this, but I think that perhaps
ol' Bats and Bruce will be out of commission for a while, along the lines
of the 1990's Knightfall story that had Azrael take over as Batman while
Bruce nursed a broken back. I truly don't think it will be a permanent
change though. Too much Batman mythos to throw away. In the short term,
for story sake, OK. But why would DC do it for the long term? Answer:
they wouldn't. Just my opinion though. Marvel's Secret Invasion ends two
of the mini-series involving the Inhumans (#4 of 4) and the X-Men (also
#4 of 4). Both Captain America (#44) and Hulk (#8) are shipping this week
with John Buscema variant covers in addition to the regular ones. Daredevil
(#113) continues its story with the new villain Lady Bullseye, and rounding
out the week is Buffy (#19) which finishes up the Fray story, though it's
running a bit late schedule wise. That's about it for now.
Congrats to the WSU Cougars
for winning the Battle of the Bad against the UW Huskies. UW could barely
score against the worst defense in major college this year and WSU, with
a very bad offense to go with the worst defense too, still got the job
done eventually against the Huskies. I almost called it perfectly as both
teams tried to blow the game. UW missed three field goals and WSU had
no touchdowns scored until about a minute left in the fourth quarter.
That touchdown tied the game at 10-10, and they needed two overtimes to
finally produce a winner. The game gives the Cougs two wins this season
and the Huskies looking at a big 0-12 goose egg, assuming they lose as
they're supposed to against California in two weeks. P.U. At least the
winter baseball meetings are coming. I'm curious what moves our new GM
will make. I like the manager choice of Don Wakamatsu. A new, fresh face
with a great reputation. I also believe former catchers make the best
managers, so I like that too. Now, lets see the team that gets put together...
Paula’s Picks
Thanksgiving is just a few days away! We did our Thanksgiving shopping
last night, and I’m always amazed at how expensive spices are, especially
when it’s something you only need a tablespoon of once a year. For
our brine, we need a tablespoon of whole Allspice berries. It’s
$10 for a jar. I don’t need a whole jar and they would probably
go bad by next year. I found a way around that though. The bulk spices!
Only 52 cents for a tablespoon of Allspice berries! Take that jarred spices!
In last week’s newsletter,
Rick talked about dumb injuries. We got some good stories; including a
bike ride into a wall, one about a guy that picked his nose until it bled
(I think that was a joke, though). I thought I would share one too! One
day my bedroom lamp went out. I replaced the bulb and it still didn’t
work. I was in college at the time, taking an electronics course (for
those who don’t already know, I have an Associate’s Degree
in Computer Technology). So, I figured I could fix it, no problem. I was
looking at the socket and wondered if the connections were loose, so I
reached in to grab them and electrocuted myself. I forgot to unplug the
dumb thing. I somehow got it working, but can’t remember how. I
think electrocution messes with memory. The lesson: Never work on electrical
equipment while it’s still plugged in. I used that one a lot during
my Xerox years.
It’s a week of beginnings
for comics this week. Jack of Fables #28 starts with a new storyline titled
“Jack’s Big Book of Wars.” I don’t know if anyone
else has noticed this but, it always has something interesting above the
title of the book like “Everyone wishes they had hair like…Jack
of Fables.”
Wonder Woman #26 also features
a new storyline titled “Rise of the Olympian.” What’s
this about Manazons? I’ve gotta catch up on my Wonder Woman!
Sandman’s Death makes
a guest appearance in Madame Xanadu #6 this week. I’ve enjoyed this
series and the art is beautiful. It’s been an interesting and enjoyable
read.
We’re also finally getting
the newest issue of Buffy #19. This one wraps up the Fray storyline. Dark
Horse says it’s back on schedule and it will be back to it’s
regular first week of the month release time for the rest of the issues.
Have a great Turkey Day everyone! |
