News for the Week of November 19, 2008
Rick’s Writin’s
With all the stuff going on in the world, from Obama's win to the daily
doom and gloom of the financial reports, the very crappy fall season of
football we've had here in Seattle, and the grind of trying to keep business
going in tough time, you know what's bugging me most??? The fact that
I clipped my big toe toenail way too short and it's killing me. I hate
stupid self inflicted injuries. Injuries seem to hurt worse when you've
done it to yourself. Like recklessly biting into a slice of hot pizza
and pulling the cheese off, burning your lip to blistering (Paula), or
playing Tarzan on the monkey bars as a kid and swinging too far after
catching the bar and falling on your head (me). I hate toe breaking kicks
to bedposts, table legs or door jams because I don't know how to walk
around in my own house. Or clipping your toe nail too close then kicking
your emergency brake pedal as you get into your car and having to wait
five minutes before you can even turn the key because you can't think
straight from the pain. To help ease my pain, I think it would be fun
to ask you folks to respond to this newsletter with particularly stupid
self inflicted injuries, or ones that really annoy you and we'll put together
a list and post it in a future newsletter (anonymously of course, unless
you want the recognition). Maybe we can even vote on the stupidest or
funniest one and give a prize, like perhaps a minor league Darwin award.
(If you don't know what a Darwin award is, Google it. Hours of hilarious
reading to be had). Speaking of Prizes, congratulations to Greg C. on
winning our current events art contest, featuring his Sarah Palin Spongebob
with Mermaid Man McCain and Obama Barnacle Boy.
This week’s comic list
is full of good mid range books but for me, nothing super spectacular
except for two of my sweeties books, Batgirl (#5of 6) and Batman and the
Outsiders (#13). I've resigned myself to the fact that not all share my
love for Barbara and Cassie and I'm no longer way, WAY over-ordering their
titles. Still, this week's Outsiders is part of the Batman RIP story as
the Outsiders wonder what the title of their book will be if there is
no Batman, or if there will even be an Outsiders, since Bruce's money
pays for their adventures. The Kingdom Come sequel in the Justice Society
book is in a weekly one-shot special phase, and after last weeks Superman
special we have JSA Kingdom Come Magog. Read JSA #20 or the Kingdom Come
trade if you don't know who Magog is, but trust me, his arrival is not
good. Supergirl (#35) carries the New Krypton story-arc this week. I need
to get started on this one. I really like the green color DC's using on
the covers of these books. The movie, directed by Sin City's Frank Miller
is coming next month, so besides the on going Spirit book (#23) we'll
have a Spirit Special by the original creator Will Eisner this week. The
special is supposed to have 1950's stories that feature the movie villainess
Sand Saref, played by Eva Mendes. I love these stories. They're funny,
good adventures with lots of oddball characters and told in a variety
of ways such that they're always interesting. I hope you try it out. On
the Marvel side, there's a couple Punishers, Thunderbolts (#126), and
Deadpool (#4) plus some decent other books. The highlight I guess would
be Fantastic Four (#561), with it's Dr. Doom story and supposedly the
"Death" of Sue Storm...of course it may not really be, but who
knows. Cap is still dead. Guess we'll find out. 'Til next time...

Only one more week until Turkey Day and the holiday shopping craze officially
begins! I usually don’t leave my house on Black Friday, but I keep
hearing about all of these great deals (especially on electronics). Still,
even thinking about leaving my house to stand in long lines with massive
crowds gives me the chills. I think I’ll sit this year out. Again.
Speaking of holiday shopping,
we’re getting in the Vertigo Tarot Deck Set 20th Anniversary Edition.
This tarot deck comes with all the Major Arcana cards featuring Vertigo
characters. It also comes with a 128-page book, storage box, and bag to
hold your cards. I can’t wait to see it. It’s a great gift
for anyone that like Sandman or Tarot cards!
For books this week, I’m
looking forward to the new Heroes Volume 2 hard cover. This book collects
the online comics from Season 2. It even has a story about Takezo Kensei.
I thought he was one of the most interesting characters from last season.
We’re also getting Fables
Volume 11 War and Pieces trade paperback. This book collects issues 70
though 75 and tells the story of the war. It also includes a story focusing
on Cinderella. I love that Bill made her a super spy in this series. She
kicks major butt! |
